A body of work spanning over 7 decades

On Monday, August 18, 2025, the painter and graphic artist Günter Horn - who first made a name for himself as a stage designer at Berlin theaters such as the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (Rameau's Nephew) while sharing a studio in Berlin with other painters and graphic artists of his time until he fell in love with the beautiful north of Germany, which he set out to explore and then helped shaping it while his work as an artist has been highly regarded for many decades, even today in his age, not only by art collectors, but also, in particular, by theater and film professionals ...

... will celebrate his 90th! birthday.

90. What a number! And he still spends every minute of every day in his studio, creating new mystical dream worlds on canvas. Influenced by the landscape of the north, which he fell in love with at such an early age...

His annual vernissages at the Kunsthof, where the artist has lived and worked for many decades with his wife, the theater and film actress Karin Ugowski, who is well known from film and television, have been a focal point and hub for many decades. This is true for other artists, artist friends, and colleagues, as well as for names from the world of television, film, and theater. This remains the case to this day. And his wife's readings in this setting complement his works in the most beautiful way imaginable. Newspapers have reported on this time and again.

At the major art festivals, which for almost 30 years turned summer into a festival in the region, often lasting several days and with cars parked along the roadside all the way to the next village, art lovers, artists, authors, film and theater makers, and of course the locals gathered together in the atmosphere of his and other artists' works on this idyllic remote farm, which was almost reminiscent of Tuscany. film and theater makers, and, of course, the locals gathered together in the atmosphere of his and other artists' works on this idyllic, remote farm, which is somewhat reminiscent of Tuscany. However, from a distance, it was difficult to see anything of the farm, which was tucked away in a field hollow at the edge of the forest. Because of all the tents and campers that blocked the way to the festival. Which was a good thing, because finding the farm is not that easy otherwise.

His annual calendars featuring his works are also very popular and are requested and purchased every year in many surrounding municipal museums and tourist information centers. They are sought after by tourists visiting the beautiful Mecklenburg Lake District, his beloved adopted home, as well as by locals who know the artist well and appreciate his warm and down-to-earth manner. And in what a wonderful way he blends their homeland with life and art.

No wonder, then, that well-known author and novelist John Erpenbeck once aptly described these works as “symbols of life.” - “What makes you different from trees and bushes? You sprout, you blossom, and you also wither away,” wrote Theodor Storm. - Author Erpenbeck followed this basic idea with the works of Günter Horn and created a deeply philosophical, unforgettable book with texts accompanying the artist's lithographs and drawings.

And the work of this painter and graphic artist is also commemorated in a completely different way. Large murals commissioned by mayors, citizens, or event organizers in district capitals or larger cities such as Berlin adorn the walls of large buildings and industrial areas. And exhibitions all over the world have featured his works. From the Pyrenees to Lake Baikal. From the tulip fields of the Netherlands to Sicily.

And a little anecdote that has been circulating for many years tells of a mayor of a town who is said to have regularly asked him, with a mischievous smile, for a painting of himself on his birthday, which he then exhibited in the town hall with a touch of self-deprecating humor, to the delight of everyone. This artist truly knew how to bring together his work, the country, people, culture, and even politics in a down-to-earth way and make everyone smile.

Congratulations on your 90th birthday to the taciturn but visually stunning artist! And thank you for all your wonderful work, which reflects and adorns this fairytale landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in such an incomparable way.

The most beautiful fusion of art, culture, and nature since Monet and Brittany. Chapeau!
